Start with the number from the device
Ask the seller to open Settings in front of you: Settings → General → About. Use the serial number or IMEI shown on the iPhone itself, not a photo from the listing or a box that may belong to another device.
- Match model, color, storage, and listing details.
- Use the serial number privately for verification.
- Check coverage through Apple or a trusted report.
Find My and Activation Lock come first
If you see “iPhone Locked to Owner” or the setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, stop. The iPhone should be erased and no longer linked to the previous owner before you take ownership.
- Ask the seller to turn off Find My in front of you.
- Start setup enough to confirm there is no previous-owner account prompt.
- Do not accept “I will give you the account after payment.”
Look for MDM or supervision
Some company or school devices can show Remote Management during setup, even after erasing. Check Settings → General → VPN & Device Management and watch for any “Supervised” message.
- A management profile can enforce restrictions.
- Resetting does not always remove organization enrollment.
- Safe state: no profile and no Remote Management screen.
Read battery and parts history carefully
On iOS 15.2 and later, supported models may show Parts and Service History after certain repairs. Read Genuine, Used, Unknown, or Unverified labels carefully, and never judge the iPhone by battery percentage alone.
Also watch for part Activation Lock on used parts: Apple says a previously used part linked to someone else’s Apple Account may stay locked until it is unlocked, which can affect service, warranty, and resale decisions.
- Check Battery → Battery Health & Charging.
- Review Parts and Service History if it appears.
- Test display, touch, brightness, True Tone, and cameras.
Do a quick hands-on test
After the digital checks, test the iPhone in your hand. Open Camera, shoot a short video, test speakers and microphone, Face ID or Touch ID, charging, Wi‑Fi, cellular, buttons, and vibration.
- Charge it with a known cable.
- Test a SIM or eSIM when possible.
- Do not pay if the seller refuses inspection time.
Buy only when the evidence matches
A safer purchase combines a clear report, no previous-owner account lock, no MDM, understandable parts history, and a successful hands-on test. Any unclear item should lower the price or stop the deal.
- Green: documented and tested.
- Yellow: missing or unclear information.
- Red: Activation Lock, MDM, or refusal to inspect.
Short video: the right order before payment
A quick visual flow: get the number from Settings, verify Find My, look for MDM, then review parts and test the phone.
Official sources used
Do not let the price decide alone.
Use the report as a supporting step before payment, then test the iPhone in person with the seller.
